It happen's every day. Someone walks by me and says "Hey how's it going?" and I simply, because of habit say "Great, how are you?" Liar!! I lied to them. I didn't even have to think about what I would say, it just naturally came out. Why is that? We all do it or have done it recently if we're honest. And we do it without even thinking.
There is another lie that happens within the body of Christ and within people that attend church that is equally habitual but damaging to the body of Christ and even more so to the people in the world we come in contact with.
What got me thinking about this was when I came across these verses in the book of I John this morning. Check it out.
'This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light,
and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship
with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we
are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each
other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.'
1 John 1:5-7 NLT
Down through the ages one of the biggest complaints the world has had against the church is hypocrisy and it still rings true today. It is a case that has been brought against churches through out every generation.
Churches are filled with liars. I am not being mean or judgmental. I am simply speaking truth. We all have the capability to make decisions that lead us into or out of spiritual darkness. When our neighbors know that we go to church on Sunday but have our significant other spend the night on Friday they notice. When you meet an unchurched friend for coffee and we gossip and speak badly of others, they notice. When we speak as if church will change their lives and they see inconsistencies in our lives they know that we are not really different than them. They know that they are honest about their lives and we are not.
If you are feeling convicted or feeling that I am coming down on you that is the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Every word I write is to the man in the mirror reminding him that he is lying if he does not live what he speaks.
What the world needs now more than anything is not a church filled with double speak, double standards, and lying lips. What the world needs now are honest people being honest about their struggles and honest about the loving Savior who came so that we may no longer walk in darkness.
I can live with myself knowing that others know I still sin but I couldn't live with myself if people heard lies about who I claim to be and who I really am.
In order for us to walk in the light we must have fellowship with each other (church) and practice repentance through the forgiveness that is found only in Jesus blood. Friends let's stop lying and start walking in the light of His love!
