A Right Relationship with God

Something that I often hear asked as a pastor is "What do I need to do to have a right relationship with God?"  Many of us have come to a place in our lives where we have accepted Christ into our lives but then wonder what we are supposed to do next. In many places in scripture we are told to "be Holy" but how do we do that?  The Biblical word for our spiritual maturity of becoming more like Jesus is called sanctification. It is the process of growing in our relationship with God. God through the power of the Holy Spirit sanctifies us and makes us more like Himself. He makes us Holy.

Sanctification however never happens apart from several spiritual disciplines.
  • Prayer
  • Confession (of our sins to God and of our sins against others)
  • Bible reading
  • Obedience to Scripture
  • Obedience to the Holy Spirit

The Psalmist asked it this way.

'Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?"

Then he gives us the answer

Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies.

Then he gives us the result

They will receive the Lord ’s blessing and have a right relationship with God their savior.'

Psalms 24:3-5 NLT

As Christians we want the Lord's blessing on our lives and we want to have a right relationship with Him! Just like all of our earthly relationships, it does not happen by chance.  It takes effort.  It takes discipline.  It takes humility.  There can be no such thing as a prideful Christian. Sanctification can never happen apart from humility!
